Shrek Forever After: The Final Chapter

Shrek Forever After: The Final Chapter (2010) – Rated PG for mild action, some rude humor and brief language.

Has anyone noticed that in a trilogy the quality of the movies seem to dwindle with each sequel?  Some examples include the Spider-Man trilogy, The Godfather trilogy, the Back To The Future trilogy, and even the original Star Wars trilogy.  In each of these film trilogies the first film was great, the second was even better if not just as great, and the third was disappointing compared to the first two.  With this well-known fact, what hope could you have for a fourth movie in a franchise?  Well in the case of the Shrek franchise, Shrek Forever After: The Final Chapter is better than Shrek The Third but not quite as entertaining as Shrek and Shrek 2

As far as its originality, this film basically rips off its premise from It’s A Wonderful Life.  But because the Shrek films are known for poking fun at other fairy tales and pop culture, this can be forgiven.  This film begins with showing us how routine and Groundhog Day-like Shrek’s life has become as a family man with his wife, Fiona, and his triplets.  Every day is the same and he begins to miss the good ol’ days when he was a regular ogre and the villagers feared him.  He meets Rumpelstiltskin who, of course, specializes in magical contracts that make your wishes come true.  And of course there’s a catch.  Ah, there’s always a catch.  In this alternate universe, no one that Shrek knew in his old life knows who he is anymore.  And the only way to cancel the magical contract is for Shrek to kiss his true love, Fiona, who doesn’t know who he is.

This film is obviously a way for DreamWorks to cash in on this cash cow.  The film didn’t quite have the magic of the first two entries, but it was definitely way better than the third.  Despite this, however, it is a fun entertaining movie and it delivered many laughs.  In my opinion most of the laughs come from Donkey and Puss In Boots.  Their dialogue was hilarious and witty.  One of my favorite conversations of theirs was when Donkey tells Puss, “You are a cat-tastrophe!” and Puss replies, “And you are re-donkey-lous!”  Many laughs also come from small bit characters.  One of my favorites was Cookie the ogre.  His best line was about his chimichanga stand, “You’re going to be hungry after this ambush, mmkay!”  And where is our Puss In Boots movie?  Believe me, DreamWorks, we are ready for it!  Filmtastic review = 3 1/2 stars.

Interesting. I’ve got to say, nothing I’ve seen of this film has done it for me so far, nor to be honest, is it likely too – I think I’ve spent enough time in the company of the Shrek caracters over the last few years without spending another couple of hours. If it’s more of the same formula, even if that formula is still funny and better than the previous film, then I think I’ll probably be passing.

After watching Shrek The Third, I’m sure you’re not alone in not wanting to watch this film. At this point, everyone knows that they’re trying to get as much money out of this as they can and that inevitably means the quality is not the same. Thanks for the comment!
